Welcome to:
All notes for Social Studies 5th through 8th grades are posted online through the students Chromebook account. It is the student’s responsibility to print the notes out at home and study. If you do not have a printer, your child may study the notes from the document online.
5th grade-Beginning of Ancient Civilizations
6th grade- Ancient Civilizations through Colonization of the Americas
7th grade- U.S. History I through the Civil War
8th grade- U.S. History II through current time
Besides learning about history, students will learn about current events. There will be classroom discussions throughout the year, as well as papers. I hope to incorporate various learning activities in class.
I also teach Religion to the 8th grade and Math to the 5th grade.
It is very important to check the grading system on a regular basis for upcoming assignments and current grades. This will help both students and parents to be aware of what is due.
Below, you will find information for Mass, prayer, and specific grades. In addition, there is general information on grading and homework.
Mass and Prayer:
Children are expected to participate in prayers in a respectful manner. They are also expected to behave in church, say the responses, and sing. Please discuss with your child the appropriate way to pray and act during Liturgy.

Ancient Civilizations: Beginnings through Ancient Rome (5th Grade)
The 5th grade has transitioned to the new curriculum.
We will start the year reviewing basic geography, as well as how to write correctly. They will then move on to learning about the Early People.
Children should be studying their vocabulary and notes daily. There will be writing daily. Children are expected to write in complete sentences using all components of grammar and punctuation.
There will also be group projects (in school) and some individual projects. Sufficient time is given, however it is important that students do not leave anything until the last minute.
Fall of the Roman Empire through Colonization of the Americas (6th grade):
Students will begin the year learning about Early Greece.

Children should be studying their vocabulary and notes daily. There will be writing daily. Children are expected to write in complete sentences using all components of grammar and punctuation.
There will also be group projects (in school) and some individual projects. Sufficient time is given, however it is important that students do not leave anything until the last minute.

United States History I (7th grade):
Students will begin the year learning about the early exploration of the Americas and the results.
Students should be studying their notes daily.
There will also be group projects (in school) and some individual projects. Sufficient time is given, however it is important that students do not leave anything until the last minute.

United States History II (8th grade):
Last year ended with the causes of the Civil War. We will review these events and then begin learning about the significant battles and events of the Civil War, followed by Reconstruction.
Students should be reviewing notes daily.
In addition, they will be required to complete Current Event assignments.
There will also be group projects (in school) and some individual projects. Sufficient time is given, however it is important that students do not leave anything until the last minute.

Religion(8th grade):
Unit 1 is a review/reinforcement of our Catholic faith. Students will be responsible for knowing or beliefs.
Math (5th grade):
The year begins with a quick review of the 4 operations. Your child should have the multiplication tables through 12 memorized.
We will then move on to number sense.

The Freckle program will be used multiple times a week. It is a leveled program that covers various math units. We began this program last year, and it is very beneficial for the students. Students work independently on their Chromebooks.

TESTS:
Notice of at least three days is given for each test. Your child should start studying at the beginning of the chapter.
Grades can be viewed online. All assignments are reviewed with the children and all questions are answered.
You will also notice that I usually put the assignments on RenWeb before they are due, so all parents can track upcoming assignments. Please keep track of the assignments if your child needs you to.
GRADING:
There is no extra credit given. Students are expected to complete all assignments in a timely manner and study in advance.
Tests/Projects/Performance Assessments: 40%
As a rule, re-tests are NOT given.
Quizzes: 30%
Homework: 20%
Class work/Participation: 10%
Homework:
Homework is due the day after it assigned. It is collected in the morning in homeroom.
Short answer questions are checked for accuracy. They should use their textbook and apply what we discussed in class.
If it not completed at all: grade 0. They have until after playground to complete and show it to me to receive partial credit.
If it is partially done, they get partial credit based on the amount done.
No credit is given for homework turned in later.
The grades are averaged for the week and it is put in Renweb.
